Traffic Crossover on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge in Groton New London

3/27/2026

In preparation for the work on northbound Gold Star Bridge, CTDOT is announcing that the southbound Gold Star Memorial Bridge will shift into a new traffic alignment. This new traffic alignment will reduce the five (5) southbound travel lanes to three (3) southbound travel lanes.

Steel barrier will be placed on the southbound bridge to split traffic into two (2) directions. Two (2) northbound travel lanes will be established behind the steel barrier on the southbound Gold Star Bridge. A traffic crossover will be built to allow northbound I-95 traffic to cross over onto the southbound bridge and travel in northbound direction. A crossover is a temporary traffic setup that shifts vehicles from their normal side of the roadway to the opposite side so traffic can continue moving safely while construction is going on.

This work is necessary to reduce traffic volumes on the northbound Gold Star Bridge for construction purposes. Once the work is completed on the southbound Gold Star Bridge, concrete barrier will be placed on the northbound Gold Star Bridge for reconstruction and traffic purposes.

CTDOT Project No. 0094-0261 was awarded to MSR Gold Star Partners at a cost of $721,348,812 on October 03, 2025, and estimated to be completed the Fall of 2030. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is working to inform motorists and residents of current and upcoming construction activities through press releases, travel alerts, social media, project newsletters, as well as the project website, https://portal.ct.gov/DOTNBGoldStarMemorialBridge. If you have any questions related to construction, please contact us at DOT.GoldStarBridgeProjects@ct.gov.

LANE CLOSURE INFO

This work on the southbound bridge is scheduled to start the week of April 6, 2026, between the nighttime hours of 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. This revised traffic pattern on the southbound bridge will remain in effect for the duration of this project.

Work on the northbound Gold Star Bridge is estimated to start on May 9, 2026. Only two (2) lanes of traffic will be allowed on the northbound bridge. All other northbound traffic will be required to use the crossover onto the southbound bridge to travel north.

Motorists are reminded to reduce speed through the work zone and follow posted signage.

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to follow posted speed limits when driving in this area.
