The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that safety improvements will be performed on Interstate 84 westbound in Southbury and Middlebury. The work will consist of the replacement of existing substandard metal beam rail and 3-cable guide rail with metal beam rail (RB-Mash). This operation began on Sunday, May, 11, 2025 and will be completed on Monday, November 30, 2025.
The projects consists of pavement rehabilitation of approximately 7.7 miles of I-84, including the replacement of substandard guiderail, median barrier, and overall roadside safety upgrades.
CTDOT Project No. 0130-0193 was awarded to Empire Paving, Inc. at a cost of $34,677,00.42 on October 23, 2024 and is scheduled to be completed November 30, 2026. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 4 in Thomaston.
LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO
Nighttime lane and ramp closures will be in effect on Interstate 84 Westbound from Sunday, May 11, 2025 to Monday, November 30, 2025. Closures will take place between Exit 13 and Exit 16, affecting both on- and off-ramps. During this period, traffic will be detoured, and motorists are advised to follow all posted detour signs and Changeable Message Signs (CMS) for updated travel information. Traffic control signing patterns and State Troopers will guide motorists through the work zone.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
