Updated: Bridge Work on Route 72 in Plainville and New Britain

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing bridge work on Route 72 in Plainville/New Britain. This project is scheduled to occur on Monday, April 28, 2025, and be completed on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The project 0171-0501 consists of rehabilitation measures for four (4) bridges that includes, measures include, but are not limited to deck rehabilitation, superstructure rehabilitation or replacement and substructure rehabilitation. Other major project elements include paving, roadway drainage, guiderail replacement, highway design and construction, traffic engineering and work zone traffic control, illumination and Incident Management Systems (IMS) replacement or preservation, and utility coordination, as well as related design and construction requirements detailed throughout the Technical and General Provisions including Appendices and referenced authoritative sources.

CTDOT Project No. 0171-0501 was awarded to the Manafort-Brunalli Design Build Team at a cost of $33,945,000.00 on August 12th, 2024 and is scheduled to be completed August 27, 2026. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 1 in Rocky Hill.

 

LANE CLOSURES/DETOUR INFO

Route 72 Westbound

There will be a lane closure for the duration of the project on Route 72 westbound from April 28, 2025, to Fall/Winter of 2025.

 

Route 372 Between Burnham Street and Hooker Street

Route 372 between Burnham Street and Hooker Street will be closed over a full weekend (Friday p.m. to Monday a.m.) Detour dates are tentative and will be announced at a later date. Eastbound traffic will be detoured down Pine Street to Woodford Avenue, then up Crooked Street arriving back on 372 East. Westbound traffic will be detoured down Crooked Street, onto Woodford Avenue then down Pine Street, arriving back on 372 West. A separate truck detour is required. Trucks headed eastbound will turn up Farmington Avenue, Right onto Northwest Drive, then right to Cooke Street, then left onto 372 East. Trucks headed westbound will turn up Cooke Street, left to Northwest Drive, then left onto Farmington Avenue, then right onto 372 westbound.

 

Route 9 Northbound Off-Ramp to Route 72 Westbound

There will be a lane closure for the duration of the project on the Route 9 northbound off-ramp to Route 72 westbound, from April 28, 2025, to Fall/Winter of 2025.


Route 9 Southbound Chestnut Street Exit Ramp (Exit 36)

The Route 9 southbound Chestnut Street Exit Ramp (Exit 36) will be closed starting starting on  Monday October 13, to October 24, 2025.

 

Route 72 Eastbound Off-Ramp to Route 9 Northbound

There will be a lane closure for the duration of the project on the Route 72 eastbound off-ramp to Route 9 northbound, from April 28 to Fall/Winter of 2025.

 

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
