Bridge Rehabilitation on I91 Southbound in Hartford

2/19/2025

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that bridge rehabilitation work will be performed on Bridge 1469B (Dutch Point Viaduct) on I-91 southbound in Hartford. This project is scheduled to occur on Monday, March 10, 2025, and be completed in September of 2026. The project 0063-0726 consists of replacement of the bridge deck, joints, membrane and overlay, parapets and roadway lighting on Bridge No. 01469B as well as roadway improvements and related appurtenances.  The project is located on Interstate 91 southbound in Hartford just south of the I-84 / I-91 interchange and the Founders Bridge.

CTDOT Project No. 0063-0726 was awarded to J.F. White Contracting, Inc. at a cost of $70,544,422.00 on December 28, 2023, and is scheduled to be completed in September 2026. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 1 in Rocky Hill.

LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO

There will be lane closures across one of three lanes of I-91 southbound at a time through the work zone for the duration of the project. The project will be constructed in three stages. Stage 1 construction will begin on March 10, 2025, with Stage 3 construction scheduled to be completed in September 2026.

The State Street on-ramp to I-91 southbound at the Founders Bridge will be closed for the duration of the project to facilitate the temporary traffic patterns on I-91 southbound during staged construction.  Detours will be posted to direct motorists seeking I-91 southbound to use either the South Morgan Street on-ramp to I-91 southbound at Columbus Boulevard, or the Sheldon Street on-ramp to the Whitehead Highway at Columbus Boulevard where they can access I-91 southbound.

Motorists on I-84 eastbound seeking I-91 southbound will be required to merge with I-91 southbound traffic due to the temporary traffic patterns on I-91 southbound during staged construction. Currently, I-84 eastbound motorists entering I-91 southbound traffic have a dedicated lane provided.

Temporary nighttime lane closures are also expected on I-91 southbound during the project from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Temporary daytime shoulder closures are also expected on I-91 southbound during the project from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Traffic control signing patterns, along with State Troopers during temporary lane and shoulder closures as needed will guide motorists through the work zone.
