The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing a 12 month, one-way alternating traffic will begin on Route 156 in East Lyme and Old Lyme for a project replacing Bridge 02713, Route 156 over Four Mile River and Bridge 06896, Route 156 over Armstrong Brook in East Lyme and Old Lyme will start on August 13, 2025.
Bridge 06896, Route 156 over Armstrong Brook in East Lyme is presently a 6’ corrugated metal culvert and will be replaced with an 8’ precast concrete box culvert. Traffic control at this bridge will consist of one -way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signalization for the duration of the construction work for of approximately 12 months.
Bridge 02713 Route 156 over Four Mile River is a Five, 5’ corrugated metal culverts that will be replaced with a single span arched concrete culvert that will require driving piles, installing abutments, wingwalls and footings. Work on this bridge will commence on July 1, 2025; however, traffic should not be impacted until April 2026. There will be a lane shift with two lanes always open with exception to construction vehicles in and out of the work area.
Also, a new 10” sanitary sewer line will be installed at both sites during construction.
CTDOT Project No. 0104-0175 was awarded to Xenelis Construction Company, Inc. at a cost of $9,872,660.00 on May 9, 2025, and is scheduled to be completed August 31, 2027. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich.
LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO
Motorists can expect lane closures at the start of construction on either bridge may occur Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Traffic control signing patterns, flaggers, and local police departments will guide motorists through the work zone.
Bridge 06896 (Route 156 over Armstrong Brook) traffic control at this bridge will consist of one -way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signalization for the duration of the construction work for of approximately 12 month starting August 13, 2025.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
