The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) alerts the public of an upcoming replacement of railroad crossings on Routes 153 and 154 in Essex and Old Saybrook starting Monday, July 22, 2024. This work is funded through a Rail Freight Improvement Program (RFIP) grant by CTDOT and is being performed in coordination with the Town of Essex, First Responders, bus and transit providers, and Valley Railroad, the owner of the freight rail line.
Route 153 at Plains Road in Essex will be closed from Monday, July 22 to Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Construction will commence on the south side of the crossing on Monday and will continue on the north side on Tuesday.
Route 154 at the “Middlesex Turnpike” will be closed from Wednesday July 24 to Thursday July 25, 2024 from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Construction will start on the north side of the crossing Wednesday and on the south side Thursday.

Pedestrian traffic will be accommodated around the construction sites. All businesses on Routes 153 and 154 will remain accessible throughout the construction period. Lane closures will occur only at one railroad crossing at a time, with alternating one-way traffic controlled by police officers or licensed flaggers.
