Pre-Certification Training Program

The Pre-Certification Training Program has two components: the Fire Code Inspector module and the Fire Investigator module. Both modules are offered each fall and spring, with exams given at the end of training.

  • Fire Code Inspector — approximately 200 classroom hours
  • Fire Investigator — approximately 140 classroom hours

These are rounded approximations; the exact schedule and number of days varies by session. Classroom hours listed do not include examinations.

Certification is earned upon passing the required exam(s) and submitting any required documentation.

Class Seat Priority

Seats in each session are limited and filled in the following order:

  • Sponsored applicants, especially those who have already completed one of the two required certifications
  • Sponsored applicants from jurisdictions that have demonstrated an immediate need for fire officials, confirmed through a request to OEDM and OSFM
  • Other sponsored applicants
  • Independent (unsponsored) applicants

If seats remain open after sponsored applicants are placed, OEDM will not turn away an approved independent applicant.
