Computerized Exams
The Fire Investigator computerized exam is closed book; the Fire Code Inspector computerized exam is open book.
Fire Code Inspector candidates must earn an overall average passing score of 70%, and a passing score of 70% in each exam section. Fire Investigator candidates must earn an overall average passing score of 70%.
If a Fire Code Inspector candidate meets the minimum overall score but falls short of 70% on up to two of the five exam sections, they retake only the sections they did not pass. If they fall short on three or more sections, they must retake the entire exam.
Practical Exam (Fire Investigator)
The practical assessment consists of six evaluated tasks, each graded Pass/Fail. Candidates must pass all six. If a candidate fails a task, they have one same-day opportunity to retake that task. Failing the retake requires the candidate to take the entire practical assessment at the next scheduled offering (offered twice annually).
Candidates have up to one year from the date of an initial failed task to successfully complete the practical assessment. Challengers may take the computerized and practical exams in either order, but must pass both within one year of their initial attempt. Certification is granted once both are passed and all other requirements are met.
Exam Scheduling, Retakes & Absences
Final exam results are posted online in OEDM's Learning Management System. An unexcused absence from either a computerized or practical exam counts as a score of 0% and a failed exam.
Candidates may take a computerized exam (including section retakes) up to three times within a two-year period. After a third failed exam, candidates must wait one calendar year from that date before testing again.
