Building Official extended leave of absence and appointment
This Public Act 25-108 was signed by the Governor on June 24, 2025, and became effective July 01, 2025, which amends Connecticut General Statute §29-260 to allow for the CEO of any town, city or borough may appoint an acting building official if the appointed building official will be away for 15 or more consecutive days. The acting building official may be appointed for a single period not to exceed one hundred eighty (180) days.
As summarized in the OLR Bill Analysis, “Under current law, an acting building official can only be appointed if the existing building official dies, becomes disabled, is dismissed, retires, or has his or her license revoked.” This bill addresses unique situations such as when a municipal building official takes extended vacation or medical leave and allows the department to continue performing inspections and permit reviews under the direction of an appointed acting building official during their absence.
The Office of the State Building Inspector (OSBI) maintains a list of Building Officials who are appointed to a local jurisdiction. The list is in alphabetical order by the name of the jurisdiction. OSBI requests to be notified by the CEO when there is a change in appointment of the building official by emailing DAS.OSBI@ct.gov.
Sincerely,
Omarys Vasquez, AIA, NOMA
State Building Inspector
