New Haven Line Power Improvement Program

Active Projects

Project 0301-0520 - Phase 1 Signal Substation Replacements

CTDOT has developed plans to replace two railroad signal substations in New Haven and Greenwich. Railroad signal substations convert commercial power from a frequency of 60Hz to 100Hz power as used to provide cab signals for train operations. The existing signal substations were installed in the 1980s and have reached the end of their useful life. They will be replaced with new prefabricated structures due to the lack of availability of replacement parts to maintain the aging infrastructure.

Project 0301-0551 - Phase 2 Balancing Substation Replacements

CTDOT is currently developing plans to replace two railroad balancing substations in Westport and Greenwich. Balancing substations allow for the entire railroad traction power system to be sectionalized, which helps to limit the lines out of service during incidents. These existing outdoor rated balancing substations use outdated technology that has reached the end of their useful life resulting in reduced operational reliability. The replacement balancing substations will be walk-in type prefabricated structures with proper weatherproofing.

Planned Projects

Project 0301-0552 - Phase 3 Supply Substation Upgrades

CTDOT has initiated this project to upgrade outdated infrastructure at the supply substations along the New Haven Line. The Supply Substations receive power directly from the nearby Utilities to convert the 100kV power to power usable by the railroad power system. The equipment on supply substations have been in operation since their original installation in the 1980s and this project will replace the outdated oil circuit breakers, potential transformers and electromechanical relays.
