Rehabilitation of Bridge No 00162 Interstate 95 over Metro North Railroad

Rehabilitation of Bridge No. 00162 Interstate 95 over Metro North Railroad

Project Description: The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has identified Bridge No. 00162 as needing rehabilitation. The subject bridge supports Interstate 95 (I-95) over the Metro North Railroad in the city of West Haven.

The overall condition of Bridge No. 00162 is poor (Rating = 4). The primary deficiency of the bridge can be attributed to the deteriorated condition of the steel superstructure. The purpose of this project is to remove the structurally deficient status and restore the structure to satisfactory condition.

The existing bridge consists of a simply supported six-span, steel, multi-girder superstructure with a reinforced concrete deck and a bituminous concrete wearing surface. The existing substructure consists of concrete stub abutments and five reinforced concrete piers, founded on concrete piles. The total structure length is approximately 466-feet and the curb-to-curb width is approximately 88-feet along a superelevated, horizontal curve alignment.

The recommended scope involves preservation-type improvements to rehabilitate the existing bridge superstructure and substructure. Proposed repairs include: patching the concrete deck, replacing deteriorated diaphragms and deck joints, installing a new bituminous concrete wearing surface, repairing and painting the steel superstructure, externally post tensioning the steel girders as required, and patching the concrete substructure elements.

It is anticipated that temporary off-peak lane and shoulder closures will be utilized to maintain and protect traffic along I-95 during construction.

Construction: Construction is anticipated to begin in Fall 2021 and is expected to be complete by Fall 2023. Rehabilitation cost is estimated to be approximately $14,540,000 and is to be undertaken with 90% Federal and 10% State funds.
