DOT Project 0162-0159 Webpage

Welcome to the webpage for Project 0162-0159, Replacement of Bridge Carrying Route 263 over East Branch Naugatuck River in Winchester.

A public informational meeting for the project was held on Thursday, October 17, at Winchester Town Hall (338 Main Street, Winstead, CT, 06098).

There was an open forum for individual discussions at 6:00 p.m. followed by a formal presentation at 7:00 p.m. Construction is anticipated to begin spring 2027 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). The estimated cost is $4.9 million, undertaken with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the community an opportunity to learn about the proposed project and provide comments concerning the proposed improvements.

The purpose of this project is to replace and address the poor condition of the existing bridge superstructure. Additionally, the existing roadway must be widened to accommodate the minimum roadway width required by current state standards. The proposed structure is a single span, precast three-sided rigid frame structure with wingwalls, supported on a deep foundation utilizing micropiles.

The area of Route 263 between West Road and Blue Street will be closed to pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic for the duration of the construction. The proposed detour is approximately 16 miles, utilizing state routes.

Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements. Permanent right-of-way acquisitions will be required to accommodate wingwalls and for roadway stabilization. Temporary right-of-way acquisitions will include easements to accommodate temporary construction activities.
