Welcome to the webpage for State Project No. 0161-0147, Replacement of Bridge No. 04986 carrying Sugar Hollow Road over Norwalk River in Wilton.
A virtual public informational meeting for the project will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. This meeting aims to inform the community about the proposed project, gather feedback, and answer any questions.
The purpose of this project is to reopen the bridge with a new structure that will be able to hold current load standards with improved safety measures for all roadway users. It is currently closed to vehicular traffic due to its inability to carry legal loads.
The proposed replacement structure will include a 48’-0” long single span bridge comprised of prestressed concrete deck units with a cast-in-place concrete topping slab supported by concrete abutments and micropile foundations socketed to bedrock. The roadway over the bridge will be widened to 24’ and the bridge will marginally improve the hydraulic performance.
The proposed project also involves improving the intersection of Sugar Hollow Road and Sunset Pass with Route 7, roadway reconstruction along 375’ of Sugar Hollow Road and 100’ of Sunset Pass, roadway drainage improvements, installation of bridge rail, and approach rail systems meeting current safety standards.
Right-of-way impacts include one partial take, one drainage ROW easement, easements to slope for the support of the highway on three properties, temporary construction easements on two properties, rights to construct driveways, the installment of sediment control system, topsoil, and seed, and the removal of pavement.
Construction is anticipated to begin spring 2028 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $4 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds.
