Welcome to the webpage for Project 0001-0108, Replacement of Bridge 04582, Long Hill Road over the Hop River in the Town of Andover.

The purpose of the project is to replace the Long Hill Road Bridge over Hop River with a longer single-span bridge. The project is necessary because the 90-year-old structure has fallen into an irremediable state of disrepair. Its concrete deck is in poor condition, and deterioration of the remainder of the bridge components is advancing to a similar poor condition state. The structure is also scour critical, and its waterway capacity is in need of improvement.

The proposed replacement bridge will feature an 80-foot clear span, which is twice that of the existing 40-foot clear span over Hop River. The new structure will maintain the existing 30-foot bridge roadway width, which accommodates bi-directional vehicular traffic on a 15-foot-wide travel path for each direction. A 6-foot-wide sidewalk will, however, be added along the west side of the bridge and approach roadways to provide for enhanced pedestrian safety from the existing sidewalk south of the bridge to the parking area for the town ball fields north of the bridge. The replacement bridge will consist of a precast, prestressed concrete box beam superstructure on pile-supported reinforced concrete integral abutments. A cast-in-place concrete shear slab will be poured on top of the precast, prestressed concrete box beams, and the shear slab within the bridge roadway limits will be protected by a waterproofing membrane overlain with a bituminous concrete wearing surface. Open metal bridge railing that meets current crash test performance criteria will be mounted atop concrete curbing along both sides of the new bridge. The replacement structure with its pile-supported foundation will be stable for maximum predicted scour. Work on the approach roadways will include, but not necessarily be limited to, construction of concrete bridge approach slabs, pavement reconstruction, placement of concrete sidewalk along the west side of the roadway adjacent to the bridge, and installation of guide railing that satisfies present safety criteria. The existing horizontal and vertical roadway alignment will remain essentially unchanged. The proposed increased bridge span will, however, reduce the frequency with which the bridge and Long Hill Road to the north experience flooding.

Work will be performed utilizing a road closure at the bridge with Long Hill Road vehicular traffic detoured around the site via U.S. Route 6 and Hendee Road. The complete detour length is approximately 5.1 miles with an estimated travel time of 8 minutes. Temporary alternating one-way traffic may be implemented to perform certain construction activities. Access to the parking area for the ball fields located immediately northwest of the bridge will be maintained for public use during the duration of the project. No temporary pedestrian facilities will be provided.

Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed project are not envisioned.

Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2026 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way (if required) and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $4,100,000. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with a minimum 80% federal funds and up to 20% State funds.
