The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans for improving the CTDOT maintenance and existing winter storm operations site on 900 Post Road East adjacent to the Sherwood Island Connector in Westport.
The project involves the construction of a general maintenance building. The general maintenance building consisting of approximately 17,000 square feet of bay area and a 5,600 square foot office area. The new building will include areas for maintenance operations, private office areas, and supporting office spaces. A new 2,050 square foot truck wash facility will be added to the site. Corresponding site improvements which will include primary storm water treatment will be made and the existing 6,000 square foot facility will be converted to storage. No additional personnel or equipment are anticipated under the project. The present schedule indicates that final design plans will be available in September 2024. The project will be state funded.
This project is necessary because the current facilities are functionally obsolete and do not meet current CTDOT standards and the site does not comply environmentally with the CTDOT standing agreement with the state of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). The maintenance operations at the site will remain unchanged. The CTDOT is looking to add a drive directly to the Sherwood Island Connector to help alleviate traffic on Post Road East (Route 1) and facilitate winter operations for the CTDOT.
It is CTDOT policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development. If there is adequate interest, an informational meeting will be conducted. At this time, it is not anticipated that a formal public hearing will be necessary.
