CONNECTICUT CLEAN FUEL PROGRAM RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) today announced the award of Connecticut Clean Fuel Program funds to municipalities and agencies. The Federal Highway Administration through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Program has made funding available to Connecticut to assist in the purchase of clean fuel vehicles and diesel retrofit technologies (DRT). A total of $925,776 has been awarded by CTDOT under this program.
The goal of the Connecticut Clean Fuel Program is to improve air quality by encouraging the use of alternative or clean fuel vehicles and/or diesel retrofit technologies and emission control devices. Connecticut municipalities and other public agencies are eligible to participate in the program which reimburses these municipalities and agencies the cost difference between buying a typical vehicle and buying an alternative/clean fuel vehicle, or the full cost of the DRT.
“The Department is thrilled that so many municipalities and public agencies are looking towards replacing a portion of their fleet or retrofitting existing fleet in order to improve air quality and dependency on petroleum based fuels,” stated CTDOT Commissioner James Redeker. “This program has the added benefit in that it may also provide savings in lower fuel and vehicle maintenance costs.”
Typically, clean fuel vehicles (CFV) are hybrid electric vehicles or operate on compressed natural gas, propane or electricity. Diesel retrofit technologies involve the addition of an emission device to remove emissions from the engine’s exhaust. Examples of these emission control devices include diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate filters, exhaust gas recirculation, and closed crankcase filtration systems.

Recipients of this funding have until December 31, 2014, to purchase the approved vehicle or retrofit technology in order to receive the reimbursement. All awardees must also adhere to the program’s terms and conditions.
