The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans for the Replacement of Illumination Systems in Greater Hartford. The project involves the replacement of the existing roadway lighting systems on Route 190 from East Street North/Route 159 to west of I-91 in Enfield and Suffield, Interstate 84 and Interstate 384 interchange in East Hartford and Manchester, and Interstate 84 from Interchange 36 through Interchanges 35, 34 and 33 in Farmington, New Britain, and Plainville as well as Route 72 at the Interstate 84 overlap in Plainville. The replacement of existing roadway lighting systems involves replacing the existing light poles, light pole foundations, light fixtures, underground circuitry and electric service cabinets with new light poles, light pole foundations, LED type light fixtures, underground circuitry, and electric service cabinets. The purpose of this project is to replace existing light fixtures and roadway lighting systems that have reached the end of their useful life to improve the operation and reduce the maintenance requirements of the roadway lighting systems.
The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in February 2026, with construction anticipated to start in the summer of 2026, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with 80 percent (80%) federal and 20 percent (20%) state funds.
It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with the CTDOT to assist in the project's development.
