The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that multi-use trail improvements and roadway crossings on Barber Hill Road, Route 14 (Main Street), Route 14 (Sterling Road) and Route 14A (Plainfield Pike) will begin on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. The project consists of multi-use trail improvements and roadway crossings along a portion of former rail grade beginning at River Street, east of the Village Center Circle in Plainfield. The improvements continue east approximately 5.7 miles into and across Sterling before terminating at an existing multi-use trail at the Rhode Island state line.

The scope of the project involves improvements to the existing paved portion of the trail as well as new full depth reconstruction and regrading at the unimproved portions of trail. Newly constructed portions of the trail will be granular pavement surface between eight and ten feet wide with two-foot graded shoulders. Drainage improvements along the corridor will also be made.

CTDOT Project No. 0108-0189 was awarded to American Industries, Inc. at a cost of $3,850,000 on July 2, 2023. This project is administered by District 2 in Plainfield and Sterling.
