Replacement of Bridge Deck Joints–Route 9 & 72 in Berlin, New Britain, Newington, Farmington, Bristol, Plymouth, and Plainville

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing the start of work for replacement of Bridge Deck Joints on Routes 9 & 72 in Berlin, New Britain, Newington, Farmington, Bristol, Plymouth, and Plainville beginning on April 1, 2024. Faulty joints allow for the intrusion of water and de-icing chemicals to leak onto major bridge components below the deck which accelerates deterioration. Replacing the bridge deck joints proactively and systemically will help mitigate deterioration. Deck ends will be repaired as needed during joint replacement. Additionally, this project will help build a bridge deck joint database to keep track of joint data and help inform and improve future joint replacement projects. This project is being initiated under the “Bridge Joint Replacement Program.” These bridges have been identified in this Statewide Program as a priority to address CTDOT’s structures within the bridge inventory and maintain their major components in a “State of Good Repair.” This maintenance project is being programmed using additional reauthorization funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

DOT Project No. 0170-3654 was awarded to Hammonasset Construction LLC at a cost of $8,212,521.50 on 12/12/23 and is scheduled to be completed 9/19/25.  This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 1 in Rocky Hill.
