Office of State Fire Marshal Recommendation

There is a new concept regarding trash removal that is starting to make its way to Connecticut. This concept is called Trash Valet and enables individuals that live in apartments buildings, mostly, to leave their trash in the corridor of the apartment building to be picked up by the "valet" company.

Trash valet is not covered in the present State Fire Code or Fire Prevention Code nor will it be addressed in the upcoming State Codes. NFPA will be addressing it in the 2022 NFPA 101 document and ICC has yet to address the concept. If you run across this in your jurisdiction there is no code language or flow that allows you to address this issue directly.

The Office of State Fire Marshal offers these recommendations should you run across Trash Valet:

  1. The trash containers and lids should be noncombustible
  2. The trash container should not exceed 15 gallons
  3. The trash container should be liquid tight
  4. The trash container should not extend into the required minimum corridor width
  5. The trash container should not occupy the corridor for more than 18 hours
  6. The combustible trash or recycling materials should not occupy the corridor for a single period exceeding 5 hours

We hope you find this useful and as always the Office of State Fire Marshal stands ready to assist you in any way we can.

Regards,

William E. Abbott
