The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing a two-week nighttime closure of Route 161 (Flanders Road) in East Lyme. This nighttime closure is scheduled to occur on Sunday, September 8 and be completed on Sunday, September 22, 2024. Route 161 (Flanders Road) will be closed to traffic in the immediate area under the existing bridge to place new structural steel for bridge construction.
The purpose of the project is to correct the vertical geometry of I-95, replace the I-95 bridge over Route 161, and construct new on and off ramps at Exit 74. CTDOT Project No. 0044-0156 was awarded to Manafort Brothers at a cost of $148,000,000 on February 1, 2023.

LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO
Route 161 (Flanders Road) in East Lyme will be closed to traffic in the immediate area under the existing bridge to place new structural steel for bridge construction from Sunday, September 8 until Sunday, September 22, 2024, during the nighttime hours from 8:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.
The Exit 74 northbound on-ramp will remain open during this time.
The Exit 74 southbound off-ramp will also remain open during this time.
At minimum, one travel lane in each direction on Route 161 will be open to traffic at all other times.
To access Route 161 northbound:
Detoured traffic will turn right onto the I-95 northbound entrance ramp, take Exit 81, turn left onto Waterford Parkway, turn left onto Cross Road, turn left onto I-95 southbound entrance ramp, and take Exit 74.
To access Route 161 southbound:
Detoured traffic will turn right onto Frontage Road, take I-95 southbound on-ramp, follow I-95 southbound, take Exit 73, turn right onto West Society Road, turn right onto Society Road, turn left onto the I-95 northbound entrance ramp, and take Exit 74 to access Route 161 southbound.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
