Start of Construction on the Merritt Parkway in Norwalk and Westport

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of construction activities, beginning on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, for safety improvements, resurfacing, enhancements and bridge improvements on the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) between Exit 40 and Exit 41 in Norwalk and Westport.

The project involves resurfacing and safety improvements to the Merritt Parkway in both directions between Main Avenue in Norwalk and Newtown Turnpike in Westport. Roadway improvements include resurfacing and cross slope corrections, full depth pavement replacement, updated guiderail installation, improvements to existing drainage, 8-foot widened shoulders, and updated median curbing and barrier. Work also includes improving and updating the existing landscaping. This project will also make minor improvements to three bridge structures - West Rocks Road over Route 15, Grumman Avenue over Route 15, and Route 15 over Chestnut Hill Road.

Motorists can expect lane closures on the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) during off peak hours. The allowable work hours for this project on the Merritt Parkway are Monday through Friday southbound between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., and northbound between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.

Motorists can also expect long-term alternating lane closures on Grumman Avenue over the Merritt Parkway in the summer of 2021. Temporary signalization will be installed and alternating one-way traffic will be maintained.

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to remain alert, observe and heed signage, drive cautiously, and to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity

DOT Project No. 0102-0368 was awarded to Waters Construction of Bridgeport, CT on March 31, 2021, at a cost of $33,683,963.01 and is scheduled for completion on December 30, 2022.
