Resumption of Construction Activity on Route 14 over the Moosup River in Sterling

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that construction activity will resume on April 5, 2021, for bridge replacement work on Route 14 over the Moosup River in Sterling.

The project consists of replacing the existing structure with precast prestressed concrete deck units supported on cast-in-place pile-supported footings. The precast deck units will be topped with a concrete deck, membrane waterproofing, and a bituminous concrete overlay. The existing 30-foot span will be increased to 36 feet. The channel will also be widened along the west side. The curb-to-curb width of the bridge will increase slightly to 37’-8”. A new 5-foot sidewalk will be constructed across the bridge along the north side.

Route 14, at the intersection of Church Street and Main Street, will be detoured while the demolition and construction of the new bridge is performed. The detour will occur between May 3, 2021 and September 22, 2021. The specific detour route will be published in a future press release. Alternating one way traffic may occur periodically until the start of the road closure. Traffic control personnel and signing patterns will be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone.

Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity.

DOT Project No. 0136-0073 was awarded to New England Road Inc. at a cost of $1,908,168.11 on December 10, 2019, and is scheduled to be completed by October 31, 2021.
