The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the scheduled commencement of work activities on March 23, 2021, and a scheduled 21-day detour of Route 123 beginning on April 12, 2021, for the project to replace Bridge 06695 carrying Route 123 (Smith Ridge Road) over Rose Brook in New Canaan. The project is located about 1.1 miles north of the intersection of Route 123 (Smith Ridge Road) and Route 106 (Silvermine Road).
A 21-day detour will occur on April 12, 2021, with the majority of the project work taking place during the detour window which ends on May 2, 2021. Additional notification will be provided prior to the detour being implemented.
Detour Information – Route 123 tentatively closed from April 12, 2021 to May 2, 2021:
- Northbound traffic will be detoured to Silvemine Road.
- Southbound traffic will be detoured to Canoe Hill Road.
- There will be directional signs installed to guide motorists through the detour.
Outside of the detour window, the public can expect single lane closures and alternating one-way traffic on Route 123 between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM from March 23, 2021, until the expected project completion on May 20, 2021. Allowable work hours for the project are between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM.
Additional Project Details
The existing structure, built in 1962 is a 72-inch asphalt corrugated metal pipe (ACCMP) and is in serious condition, exhibiting areas of severe rust and delamination. The project will include the removal of the existing 72-inch ACCMP and the subsequent installation of a 9-foot by 9-foot concrete box culvert. The concrete box culvert will be constructed to allow the placement of two feet of natural channel bottom material. The existing concrete headwall, endwall and wingwalls will be removed and concrete wingwalls will be constructed.
DOT Project no. 0089-0128 was awarded to FGB Construction Company at a cost of $968,271.00 on May 29th, 2020.
