The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of work on Thursday, April 1, 2021, for the replacement of Bridge 01350 carrying Route 137 (High Ridge Road) over the Rippowam River in Stamford.
The project consists of replacement of the existing bridge, which was originally constructed 1931 and subsequently rehabilitated in 1974. The bridge is in poor condition and is functionally obsolete due to inadequate curb-to curb width and also due to its overtopping by water-flows exceeding a 10-year storm.
The new bridge will consist of a 60-foot span length (51.7’ hydraulic clear span) superstructure supported by new integral abutments founded on steel piles. The longer span length/wider hydraulic opening improves hydraulic capacity including passage of 10-year storms without overtopping the structure.
The new bridge will be approximately 63-feet wide, including sidewalks and parapets, to accommodate four 11-foot travel lanes and 5-foot shoulders. A 5.5-foot sidewalk along the east side of the bridge will also be incorporated.
Lane Closure Information
The majority of construction activity will be performed in three stages between April 1, 2021, and November 5, 2023, while maintaining traffic flow:
- Stage 1: construct bridge on western side.
- Stage 2: construct center of bridge.
- Stage 3: construct bridge on eastern side
The contractor will be allowed to restrict left-turn movements at the intersection of Route 137 (High Ridge Road) at Wire Mill Road and to detour traffic for a duration that will not exceed sixty (60) consecutive days. The detour is currently scheduled to start in September of 2021. Additional advance notification will be provided prior to the detour being implemented.
DOT Project no. 0135-0331 was awarded to Rotha Contracting Co., Inc. at a cost of $5,867,752.95 on November 25, 2020, and is scheduled to be completed November 5, 2023.
