The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Office of Engineering is developing plans to rehabilitate the concrete pavement and improve the overall safety conditions on Route 2 in Colchester. The purpose of this project is to repair the existing Route 2 pavement and restore it to an acceptable condition that is consistent with FHWA pavement guidelines.
The existing concrete pavement was installed as early as 1956 and has reached the limit of its serviceable life. As a result, comprehensive structural pavement rehabilitation is required to extend the pavement life and restore functionality. The substandard guiderail, outdated bridge rails, and overall roadside safety conditions throughout the project limits also warrant upgrade and will be addressed as part of this project.
The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in February 2024, with construction anticipated to start in spring 2024, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with 80-percent federal funds and 20-percent state funds.
It is the Department's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with the Department to assist in the project's development. It is not anticipated that an informational meeting or formal hearing will be held for this project due to the limited nature of the proposed work.
