The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of construction for the rehabilitation of Bridge 00783 carrying Skiff Street over Route 15 in Hamden.
In order to allow space to construct and widen the Skiff Street Bridge over Route 15, traffic will be shifted to the north side of the bridge. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction (currently 2 lanes are open on westbound Skiff Street). Traffic will remain in a one lane in each direction configuration throughout the project.
The project consists of rehabilitation of the existing Bridge built in 1948 (reconstructed in 1975, repainted in 1983) currently on the structurally deficient list based on deterioration of the steel superstructure. The existing bridge is also considered functionally obsolete due to substandard under-clearance.
Work includes:
· Replacement of the 90’-6” span bridge with installation of two new bridge columns at the pier for widening.
· Widening of the bridge to accommodate two lanes of traffic in either direction on Skiff Street, including two shoulders and sidewalks on both directions.
The project will utilize stage construction. During stage 1 of the project, Skiff Street traffic will be shifted to the south side of the bridge with one lane in each direction maintained while the bridge is widened and replaced. Traffic will then be shifted to the north side of the bridge on the new structure while the south side is replaced.
Some night work will be required on Route 15 in order to carry out the project. Lane closure restrictions start time varies between 7 PM and 10 PM by day of the week, but in all cases, traffic must be restored by 6AM on all weekday mornings. Shoulder closures are allowed between 9 AM and 3 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends.
DOT Project No. 0061-0152 was awarded to CJ Fucci at a cost of $6,317,362.15 on April 17, 2021 and is scheduled to be completed November 18, 2022.
