The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a public information meeting concerning the proposed rehabilitation of Bridge 04516, on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. The formal presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. Refer to the project webpage for more detail: https://portal.ct.gov/DOTGranby55-146.
The project is identified as State Project No. 0055-0146.
The purpose of the project is to rehabilitate Bridge 04516, which carries Donahue Road over Belden Brook in Granby.
Bridge 04516 was constructed in 1956. This single span structure is 41’-10” long and carries two lanes of traffic in eastbound and westbound directions with a curb-to-curb width of 22’-10”. The bridge is located approximately 250-feet west of the intersection of Donahue Road with Lost Acres Road. The existing bridge superstructure is comprised of prestressed concrete deck units that are topped with a bituminous concrete wearing surface. The bridge superstructure is supported by reinforced concrete abutments with spread footing founded on bedrock.
The proposed rehabilitation of Bridge No. 04516 involves replacing the existing superstructure with adjacent prestressed concrete deck units that are topped with a 6” (min.) thick concrete deck. The roadway profile and curb-to-curb width of the new superstructure will match the existing profile and curb-to-curb width of 22’-10”. Concrete repairs to existing wingwalls and abutments are also proposed. Roadway pavement reconstruction at the bridge approaches and the installation of a new bridge rail and guiderail systems will also be included in the project.
The proposed rehabilitation will be accomplished during one construction season. The maintenance and protection of traffic involves a full closure of Donahue Road at the bridge and a detour of traffic. The proposed detour route is approximately 4 miles long and uses Lost Acres Road, State Route 189 (Granville Road) and State Route 539 (Mountain Road).
It is anticipated that Rights-of-Way impacts to private property surrounding the bridge will include four permanent acquisitions to keep the existing wingwall ends within the Town’s Right-of-Way, two permanent slope easements, and four temporary construction easements.
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring of 2023 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way and approval of permits. The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $1.12 million. This construction project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80-percent federal funds and 20-percent municipal funds.
The public informational meeting is being held to provide the public and local community the opportunity to offer comments or ask questions regarding the proposed project.
