Laurence Spekterman Portrait

Name: Laurence Spekterman
Title: Governor's Fellow
Department of Administrative Services

As a Governor’s Fellow with the State of Connecticut, Laurence Spekterman has carved out a meaningful path at the intersection of data, innovation, and public service. During his time with DAS, Laurence has not only tackled complex policy issues but also fostered collaboration across agencies and deepened his appreciation for public leadership.

Transforming State Government Through Data

In his role as a Governor’s Fellow, Laurence dove into strategic projects spanning school construction, workforce strategy, AI governance, and workers' compensation. What ties all these initiatives together is his core mission: to help Connecticut become more data-driven.

“My key responsibilities have been to find ways to make our state more data-driven, either by leveraging existing data to help with decision-making or collecting, developing, and publishing relevant datasets,” Laurence explains.

His projects have not only supported smart governance but also aimed to simplify and modernize processes that directly affect constituents.

Beyond the Data: Building Human Connections

Laurence’s expectations going into the fellowship were grounded in his strong data background. But the reality of the work pleasantly surprised him.

“I expected to work with lots of data. But I ended up working a lot more with people,” he shares.

Whether collaborating with Connecticut’s IT division on AI governance or supporting HR teams in building a sustainable workforce, Laurence embraced the relational aspect of his work—learning from diverse stakeholders and seeing firsthand how human-centered leadership drives better outcomes.

Proud Moments: Laying Foundations for the Future

Among his proudest accomplishments, Laurence highlights his contributions to Connecticut’s school construction grants program and the AI advisory group.

“Working on school construction gave me the opportunity to help simplify processes that districts must navigate… and it was a privilege to work with the dedicated team behind the scenes.”

He also played a role in shaping how the state approaches emerging technologies, laying the groundwork for responsible AI use that can adapt and grow in the coming years.

A Window into Public Leadership

One of the most rewarding aspects of his fellowship, Laurence says, was witnessing the decision-making processes of senior state leaders.

“In every decision our commissioners and deputy commissioners make, they weigh dozens of options and perspectives and consider how we can most prudently serve our constituents.”

It’s an experience that has shaped his understanding of government’s complexity and the importance of empathetic, strategic leadership.

Off the Clock: Running the Distance

When he’s not helping shape public policy, Laurence is out running—literally. A lifelong runner, he’s completed marathons and an ultra-marathon, and he credits the sport with teaching him endurance and personal persistence.

“Just like training for a marathon can take months, other meaningful life goals take months or years of persistence to achieve.”

He also finds joy in hiking and traveling. He fondly recalls a 30-day backpacking trip on the Pacific Crest Trail, and raves about a recent skiing experience in St. Anton, Austria.

Words of Wisdom and a Superpower Wish

Laurence encourages anyone interested in public service to connect with current and former fellows, calling the program a “great opportunity” to learn and grow.

Asked about a dream superpower, he answers with characteristic practicality: he’d control the weather to prevent disasters and ensure perfect days—74 degrees, sunny, and low humidity.

He also draws inspiration from John Harbaugh, head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, for his “relentlessly positive attitude, deep gratitude for others, and high expectations.”

One Last Fun Fact

Born and raised in Baltimore, Laurence is a die-hard Baltimore sports fan. DAS Communications has no comment on that.

A Fond Farewell

At the end of this month, Laurence will be leaving DAS to pursue exciting new opportunities in Boston. While we are sad to see him go, we are incredibly grateful for his service, insight, and dedication throughout his fellowship.

On behalf of the entire DAS team and the State of Connecticut, we wish Laurence the very best in his next chapter—and look forward to seeing the positive impact he’ll continue to make wherever he goes.
