CT LAB Book Club
The next CT LAB book club will meet virtually on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Our selection is a fiction book, titled The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong. This title is available as a Talking Book cartridge and from BARD as DB129518. A summary of the book follows. One late summer evening in the post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut, nineteen-year-old Hai stands on the edge of a bridge in pelting rain, ready to jump, when he hears someone shout across the river. The voice belongs to Grazina, an elderly widow succumbing to dementia, who convinces him to take another path. Bereft and out of options, he quickly becomes her caretaker. Over the course of the year, the unlikely pair develops a life-altering bond, one built on empathy, spiritual reckoning, and heartbreak, with the power to alter Hai’s relationship to himself, his family, and a community at the brink. Following the cycles of history, memory, and time, The Emperor of Gladness shows the profound ways in which love, labor, and loneliness form the bedrock of American life. At its heart is a brave epic about what it means to exist on the fringes of society and to reckon with the wounds that haunt our collective soul. Hallmarks of Vuong’s writing – formal innovation, syntactic dexterity, and the ability to twin grit with grace through tenderness – are on full display in this story of loss, hope, and how far we would go to possess one of life’s most fleeting mercies: a second chance. Please register for the book club by calling Paula McLean at (860) 704-2216 or (800) 842-4516. Participants will receive the Zoom meeting link or dial in phone number approximately one week before the book club meeting.

2026 NLS Summer Reading Program
Registration for the 2026 NLS Summer Reading Program, presented in partnership with Braille Institute Library, is officially open! The program runs for nine weeks from June 15 through August 11. Visit the NLS Summer Reading Program for more information and registration.
This year's theme is Unearth a Story — an invitation to explore the histories, landscapes, and voices hidden just beneath the surface of the world around us. At the heart of this year's programming is a deep focus on the National Parks Service and America's public lands, woven throughout an exploration of ecology, environment and stewardship; human stories embedded in place; and the role of science, observation and memory in how we understand the world around us.
This year features two exciting ways to participate.

Narrated Soundscapes
A truly special collaboration between Braille Institute Library, National Parks Service Rangers, Library of Congress sound designers and select NLS network librarians who narrated their own state's episode. Narrated Soundscapes take you on pre-recorded, immersive audio journeys through the landscapes of four national parks, with narration provided by some of the NLS's own network library staff. A new Soundscape drops on Braille Institute Library's Summer Reading Program page every other Monday starting June 22 — once posted, each one stays available so you can explore at your own pace. No registration required — just hit play whenever you're ready.
