The mission of the Connecticut State Library is to preserve and make accessible Connecticut’s history and heritage and to advance the development of library services statewide.
The Division of Library Development's mission is to provide leadership, funding, education, and statewide services that enhance a local library's ability to deliver high-quality library service to their community.
The library curates many resources, from public records and research, to history, genealogy, and more. We host the Connecticut Library for Accessible Books and the largest collections of state newspapers and Archives. We also work with the Department of Higher Education to give you free access to research through researchitct.org.
Our services help students, researchers, librarians, and all members of the public. We aid government officials and employees from all three branches of state government. We support FDLP Depository Libraries in CT and RI and administer the Connecticut Documents Depository program. We also administer grants, policies, and programs to support library development across the state. The Connecticut State Library is an Executive Branch agency of the State of Connecticut. Discover the many ways we support and inspire readers.

Photographic History of the Connecticut State Library Building
In 2004, the Connecticut State Library celebrated 150 years of service to the people of Connecticut. To honor this milestone, the State Archivist and other staff created an online exhibit. This exhibit celebrates the construction of the Connecticut State Library’s current home in Hartford. This is a portion of that exhibit.
