What do you imagine when you think about the future of Connecticut transportation?

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will look to answer this as we work with you—our residents, public agency partners, and other stakeholders—to update our state’s long-range transportation plan (LRTP), Connecticut 2055. This federally required plan is a strategic blueprint that sets out the goals, performance measures, policies, and investments needed to develop the state's transportation system over the next 30 years. It will serve as a framework for preparing future, project-specific transportation plans, such as CTDOT’s State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

Through analysis and public and stakeholder engagement, the plan will outline a vision for a transportation system that connects and enhances our communities. We strive for a plan that supports economic growth, improves lives, and meets the evolving needs of everyone in Connecticut to ensure a thriving, resilient, and equitable place to live, work, and play. Connecticut 2055 will provide strategic direction for all transportation modes including state highways and bridges, freight and passenger rail, ports and waterways, aviation, trucking, public transportation, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

We look forward to your input to ensure this plan reflects your vision for Connecticut’s future. Click below to learn more about how you can connect with this plan.

Why is it important to update?

As you have experienced, our state is growing—we have an increasing number of residents who call our great state home, along with more diverse economic opportunities. Additionally, technology is advancing rapidly. These trends mean that our transportation needs are changing – how the transportation network is being used and what is needed to keep Connecticut safe.

As a forward-looking state, our long-range transportation plan needs to be updated to ensure we are adapting to these changes so that we can best leverage our major planning initiatives, goals, and planned investments. The LRTP is generally updated every five years and assesses the effects of current trends and forecasts through 2055.
