State Project No. 0063-0633

Safety and Streetscape Improvements

Route 44 (Albany Avenue)

between Westbourne Parkway/Homestead Avenue and Bedford Street

City of Hartford

Scope of work

Scope of Work

The project consists of modifications to Albany Avenue including changing the lane use from the current two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane to one lane in each direction and a center lane to be used as exclusive left-turn lanes in both directions. Changes to the directions of some one-way streets are also proposed and curb "bump-outs" will be constructed to shorten the pedestrian crossings. Streetscape work will consist of new sidewalks with decorative patterns, new street lighting and trees. The road work is also being coordinated with the Metropolitan District Commission's (MDC) clean water project, which will separate the storm water and sanitary sewer systems.

 Status

The City of Hartford is designing this project with oversight by the Department of Transportation and in conjunction with MDC's design of the Clean Water Project. The design team has also been coordinating with a number of neighborhood groups and organizations as well as individual residents and business owners. The Preliminary Design (roughly 30% complete) was presented at a public informational meeting on March 19, 2008. The information from that meeting can be seen by clicking on the links on this page. The next phase of the design will include the acquisition of additional right of way as needed, obtaining environmental permits, design of construction “staging” plans, and coordination with utility companies. The project is currently scheduled for advertising in August, 2009 with construction commencing in 2010 and an expected completion date in the fall of 2012. These dates are dependent on several factors including timely acquisition of permits and right of way and availability of funding.
