CTDOT Developing Plans to Replace Sheet Aluminum Signs Along Interstate 91 and Route 20 in Hartford and Windsor/Windsor Locks

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to replace sheet aluminum signs and posts along I-91 on and off ramps, from the Charter Oak Bridge in Hartford to the Windsor/Windsor Locks Town Line and along the limited access section of CT-20, including on and off ramps. The new signs will be installed in accordance with the latest Federal and State standards and guidelines.

The existing signs have exceeded their useful service life and are in need of replacement. The scope of the project involves the replacement of only those signs that have exceeded their useful life, have less than adequate retroreflectivity, have evidence of damage, or are no longer in accordance with the latest Federal and State standards and guidelines. Excluded from this project are signs that have been recently replaced or are scheduled to be replaced by other various construction projects.

“Replacing the signs improves visibility and legibility for drivers, making the signs easier to see at night,” said CTDOT Project Manager Barry Schilling.

It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development. At this time, it is not anticipated that an informational meeting or formal public hearing will be necessary.

The design plans for the project are expected to be completed in the Fall of 2024 with construction commencing in the Spring of 2025.

Anyone interested in requesting information about this project may do so by contacting Barry Schilling, Supervising Engineer, Barry.Schilling@ct.gov. Please make reference to Project Number 0171-0483.
