The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has launched the I-95 Mobility Study Fairfield/Bridgeport, charged with identifying projects that improve safety, mobility, and operations along the I-95 corridor between Bridgeport and Fairfield. “I-95 between Fairfield and Bridgeport is one of the most heavily traveled roadways in the state, carrying approximately 130,000 vehicles per day. The outcomes of the planning and environmental linkages study will streamline CTDOT’s project development and environmental review of resulting transportation improvement projects, accelerating project delivery and minimizing overall costs,” said CTDOT Project Manager David Mancini.
Traffic on Post Road and Kings Highway (US Route 1) in Fairfield and State Street (Route 130) and Fairfield Avenue (State Road 700) in Bridgeport also add to the congestion within the corridor. In addition to car and truck traffic, rail (Metro North Railroad and Amtrak), buses, bicyclists, and pedestrians travel within the corridor every day.
CTDOT encourages residents, commuters, businesses, and community stakeholders to participate in a brief survey, sharing their concerns and ideas on how to improve this corridor of highway. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.
The study’s first public information meeting is scheduled for fall 2024. Sign up to receive alerts about upcoming meetings and study activities at i95fairfieldbridgeport.com/contact.
The study will follow the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Planning and Environment Linkages (PEL) process—a collaborative and integrated approach to transportation planning that considers environmental, community, and economic goals early in the planning and design process. The study process is a high-level approach to making informed decisions about future transportation projects that better serve the needs of the community and traveling public.
CTDOT may adopt or incorporate the planning products from this PEL study into a federal or state environmental review process, pursuant to Title 23 U.S.C. § 168(d). The study is identified as State Project No. 50-222.
