The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to implement a road diet on U.S. Route 1 in Fairfield.
The project on U.S. Route 1 between Rennell Drive and Beaumont Street will consist of restriping a four-lane roadway to a three-lane roadway with a center two-way left turn lane. The project will be predominately implemented through resurfacing U.S. Route 1 and restriping the corridor. Additional improvements, such as traffic control signal adjustments, sidewalk ramp modifications and upgrades, curb improvements and storm drainage structure top replacements, will be incorporated into the project.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, a road diet, or roadway reconfiguration, that changes a four-lane road to a three-lane road can see a 19-47% reduction in total crashes.
“Road diets are low cost ways to calm traffic and improve safety,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Jonathan Corilla. “This project will enhance safety, mobility, and accessibility for all roadway users.”
The design plans for this project are expected to completed in October 2024 with a tentative advertising date of December 2024.
It’s important to CTDOT to ensure the public’s feedback and thoughts are heard and included. If anyone has any questions or comments on these projects, contact Jonathan J. Corilla, Project Manager, at (860) 594-2755 or Jonathan.Corilla@ct.gov. Please reference State Project No. 0050-0224.
