Replacement of Bridge No. 01386 Carrying Route 154 over Back River

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that Bridge No. 01386 over Back River located on Route 154 in Old Saybrook will be replaced starting April 1, 2024. Project 105-215 consists of the full replacement of State Bridge No. 01386 in Old Saybrook. This will involve the relocation of existing utilities in order to perform the work for the replacement of the bridge. A new bridge consisting of precast substructure elements and prestressed concrete deck slabs will be constructed. The overhead utilities to be relocated this season will be permanently relocated to approximately the same location after the bridge is constructed. A new 12” watermain will be installed as part of the bridge construction.

CTDOT Project No. 0105-0209 was awarded to Brunalli Construction Company for $2,720,899.75 on February 13, 2024, and is scheduled to be completed on December 12, 2024. This project is administered by the Division of Construction Operations – District 2, Norwich.

LANE CLOSURE INFO

The bridge will be closed from April 15 until May 5, 2024. Detour signs will be posted. During this time, traffic will not be able to cross the bridge.

DETOUR:

Traffic looking for the south side of the bridge from the north side will need to do the following:

  • Continue north of the bridge on Route 154 for 0.7 miles
  • Right onto Old Boston Post Road and travel for 0.7 miles to Main Street
  • Right onto Main Street and travel for 0.5 miles to Maple Avenue
  • Right onto Maple Avenue and continue for 1.3 miles until Route 154 is reached
  • Right onto Route 154 and follow for 1.2 miles until the other side of the bridge is reached

Traffic looking for the north side of the bridge from the south side will need to do the following:

  • Continue south on Route 154 for 1.2 miles
  • Left onto Maple Avenue and continue 1.3 miles
  • Left onto Main Street and continue 0.5 miles
  • Left onto Old Boston Post Road and continue for 0.7 miles
  • Left again onto Route 154 and follow for 0.7 miles until the other side of the bridge is reached
