The Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a public information meeting concerning the proposed upgrade of the existing rotary to a Modern Roundabout in Stafford, on Thursday July 29, 2021. The formal presentation will begin at 6:00 p.m. Refer to the project webpage for more detail: http://portal.ct.gov/DOTStafford134-148.
The project is identified as State Project No. 0134-0148
The purpose of the project is to increase the safety and efficiency at the intersection of Route 190 at Route 32 by upgrading the existing antiquated rotary to a modern roundabout. The features of a modern roundabout will improve safety and efficiency by decreasing entering speeds, separating conflict points, and reducing driver confusion. Additionally, the revised configuration will channelize large trucks through the intersection, eliminating their ability to strike the roof of the Police Station and adjacent utility pole, as has occurred on numerous occasions. Pedestrian improvements, including crosswalk bump-outs on Main Street and a new sidewalk along River Street, will also increase safety in the project area.
The proposed modern roundabout will be constructed within the existing roadway footprint of the circular intersection, however there are minor right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements. Pedestrian improvements, including the proposed sidewalk along River Street, will also be constructed primarily within the existing State right-of-way. However, small sliver acquisitions may be required for sidewalks. Additionally, construction easements on town-owned property may be required to facilitate construction.
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2023 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $ 1.925 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80-prcent federal funds and 20-percent state funds.
