Capitol Avenue Complex Overview
The 410-474 Capitol Avenue Property is significant in the industrial and economic history of Hartford and Connecticut. Since the 1850’s, the site has been occupied by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company, the Weed Sewing Machine Company, the Pope Manufacturing Company (manufacturer of Columbia Bicycles), the Pratt and Whitney Machine Tool Company, Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, Aetna Insurance Company, and the State of Connecticut.
In the early 1980’s Aetna purchased the complex and completed major renovations to each building. In 1995 the State of Connecticut purchased the complex, which consists of approximately 408,000 square feet of building space with 23 acres of parking and grounds.
