Patron Privacy Policy
1. Protecting your privacy is important to us. This notice explains our information practices and the choices you can make about the way the library collects and uses your information.
2. This notice applies to all information collected by or submitted to the Connecticut Library for Accessible Books. The types of personal information collected include:
Name
Address
Email address
Phone number
Parent/guardian name for minors 17 and under
Approved individuals designated as a point of contact
Date of birth
Gender
School grade (if applicable)
Name of school (if applicable)
3. We do not share information collected with outside parties except for possible uses related to the recovery of materials.
a. We use email addresses to respond to the email we receive, to confirm program registrations and occasionally to alert customers to new services they may want to use. We also send notices and e-newsletters to customers who have given us their email address for that purpose.
b. Mailing addresses provided by customers for these purposes may be used to send program registration confirmation letters and to send information about library programs, services.
c. Customers may opt-in to a separate fundraising database. Such addresses are not shared with outside parties.
d. We use non-identifying and aggregate information to better design our web site. For example, we may let it be known publicly that a specific number of individuals visited a certain area on our web site, but we would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.
e. We will never disclose a child’s personal information such as full name, address, etc. (“information that would facilitate or enable the physical or online locating and contacting of a specific individual”) without written approval from a parent or legal guardian.
f. Finally, we never use or share the personally identifiable information provided to us online in ways unrelated to the ones described above without also providing you an opportunity to prohibit such unrelated uses. If law enforcement agents in the course of an investigation request library records, the library may be required by law to release records pertaining to your activities at the library.
4. The personal information requested on our web site is sent directly to an internal database accessible only by staff or directly to a pertinent staff member’s email account. Information collected by the Connecticut Library for Accessible Books is not shared with any other agency or organization.
5. Library users have many opportunities to interact with the Library online. We treat our patrons with respect and expect the same in return. Here are some guidelines for online conduct:
a. Social networking applications are an important media to reach online users. We will use editorial controls to assure a respectful and supportive environment. Posts and hyperlinks do not imply endorsement.
b. Users participating in social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc. will be expected to be courteous and respectful in content and language. We will delete content that does not meet these standards.
6. The Library has established relationships with selected vendors for providing CT LAB services, including braille delivery and computer software programs. This may require limited sharing of customer information to provide the services. Such vendors will comply with all privacy requirements.
7. The Library’s website includes selected links to outside sites. Those sites may have different privacy statements and the Library’s notice does not apply. The Library is not responsible for protecting personal information gathered by outside websites.
8. The Connecticut Library for Accessible Books has taken reasonable and appropriate steps to safeguard the integrity of its data and prevent unauthorized access to information it maintains, including but not limited to authentication, monitoring, and auditing. Security measures have been integrated into the design, implementation and day-to-day practices of the entire operating environment as part of its continuing commitment to risk management. These measures are intended to prevent corruption of data, block unknown or unauthorized access to our systems and information, and to provide reasonable protection of private information in our possession.
