How long does the disposal process take?
Answer:
For reusable surplus items the full process usually takes about a month to complete.
There are several phases that the items go through during which claiming is open up to new entities:
- First 4 days only for internal relocation with other state agencies
- Next 4 days opens additionally to municipalities
- Next 4 days becomes a public auction
- Final 4 days opens to non-profits
Items are distributed in a first come first serve manner up until the start of public auction, when the item must go the full 4 day cycle before assigning a winner. The public can no longer make a claim after auction closing during the final phase of surplus.
Winners are given 5 days after auction ending to make a payment, and an additional 5 days after payment to arrange pickup of items.
Items determined as immediate scrap or recycle have a different timeline.
- Items that don't need to be recycled can be thrown out appropriately as soon as DAS/AM receives permission from the DAS Procurement Surplus Unit.
- Recyclable items tend to take longer to dispose as DAS/AM strives to minimize recycling costs by receiving bulk pickup discounts from the state chosen recycling vendor. Because of this, DAS/AM will usually pickup recyclable items for temporary storage when waiting to meet the quota.
