Creating a Friendly URL

A friendly URL is a short and simple web address that redirects to a longer web address. Friendly URLs are called Aliases in Sitecore. The benefit of creating a friendly URL is that they are easier to remember and contain key words about the web page.

Example:

  • Original URL: https://portal.ct.gov/Services/Education/Higher-Education/Higher-Education-Information-and-Resources
  • Friendly URL: https://portal.ct.gov/SDE-HigherEd

Create a Friendly URL
  1. Navigate to the page you wish to create a friendly URL on.
  2. Select the Alias alias icon icon from the Presentation tab in the Ribbon.
  3. In the Name field, enter your Agency acronym, then the name of the Friendly URL you would like to use, as all friendly URLs are based off the root level of Sitecore.
    • For example, SDE-HigherEd or SDEHigherEd

    • DO NOT enter any spaces in the name.
    • There is no character limit, but the point is to create a short and easy-to-remember friendly URL.
