CTDOT Developing Plans to Replace Highway Signs and Supports Along I-84 from Manchester to the Massachusetts State Line

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to replace signs and sign supports along Interstate 84 and the associated on-ramps and off-ramps from the Manchester/Vernon Town Line to the Connecticut/Massachusetts State Line.

The new signs and sign supports will be installed in accordance with the latest Federal and State standards and guidelines. The types of signs that will be replaced include but are not limited to, large overhead and side-mounted guide signs and on-ramp entrance signs.

“Many of these signs have exceeded their useful service life, are damaged, and need to be replaced,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Barry Schilling. “By bringing these signs up to the latest Federal standards, we’re improving safety for motorists along the I-84 corridor.”

The project’s scope involves the replacement of signs that have exceeded their useful service life, have less than adequate retroreflectivity, have evidence of damage, or are no longer in compliance with Federal and State standards and guidelines. This project excludes signs that have been recently replaced or are scheduled to be replaced by other various construction projects.

CTDOT’s policy is to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns to assist in the project’s development. At this time, it is not anticipated that an informational meeting or formal public hearing will be necessary.

The design plans for the project are expected to be completed in the summer of 2023, with construction commencing in 2024.
