Marrakech Inc and the East Street Art Studio-Awardee of the IDPAC Innovative Employment Outcome Pilot

January 14, 2020

Over the past few years the department has explored creative opportunities for businesses to employ people with intellectual disability.  In partnership with the Intellectual Disability Partnership Advisory Council, one of these opportunities was the Intellectual Disability Partnership Innovative Employment Outcomes Pilot. Interested entities were asked to submit business plans for an innovative or alternative business model that employs or encourages the employment of individuals with intellectual disability.  The pilot program focuses on providing support and resources to ensure the success of new business ventures that integrate individuals with intellectual disability.

One of our awardees was Marrakech, Inc.  They proposed further developing their East Street Art studio.  This studio engages and supports all artists and helps them to sell their arts.  The art studio at East Street Arts specializes in producing designed and/or handmade housewares, textiles, and accessories. This includes uniquely designed towels, mugs, coasters, cutting boards and utensils as well as one of a kind loom-woven scarves and other textile art.  The caning studio specializes in the restoration of antique hand-caned chairs.  East Street Arts is one of only a few businesses that offer this restoration service in Connecticut; therefore, this draws customers to the studio from around the entire state.
