SAFETY

The Department of Developmental Services is committed to maintaining a safe workplace.  Safety Committees are maintained in each DDS Region, Southbury Training School and Central Office. These committees assist in establishing and maintaining a safe workplace.  Your input to or involvement with these committees is welcome.  Information regarding the Safety Committee in your particular area is available from your local Human Resources office.

WORKERS' COMPENSATION

The Department of Developmental Services has many programs to ensure employee safety. However, some accidents still may occur.  If you experience a work related injury or illness, you may be eligible for benefits under Workers' Compensation. Such benefits may include payments of related medical treatment, and compensation during any period of temporary disability in accordance with State Statute.  In addition, injured employees may elect to supplement their workers' compensation benefits up to full pay by using their earned time accruals.

The State's Workers' Compensation program uses a managed care system. This system is managed by a third party administrator and all employees who are injured must obtain medical care within the preferred provider network.

In the event an employee is injured on the job, these procedures must be followed in order to be covered under Workers' Compensation:

  • Report the injury to a supervisor
  • Have the supervisor complete the Workers' Compensation form packet.
  • Injured employees seeking medical treatment MUST go to a provider in the Managed Care Network. A Third Party Administrator is the Managed Care provider for all Workers' Compensation issues.
  • If time is lost from work as a result of the injury, the employee must complete and return a Request for Use of Accrued Leave with Worker Compensation; a Filing Status and Exemption form and a Concurrent Employment /Third Party Liability form.  Employee must also provide proper medical documentation for any lost time to the workers' compensation POD email inbox:  das_rfaxwchu@ct.gov.
  • The employee cannot return to work unless proper medical documentation has been received by the DAS Worker’s Compensation POD (das_rfaxwchu@ct.gov) giving clearance for regular duty.  Accommodations will be made whenever possible to return the employee to light duty if recommended by the physician. While on light or restricted duty, the employee cannot work any overtime.

The above rules are intended to improve communications between the injured employee, their doctors and the employer to ensure a safe return to work.  Copies of all documents and forms used in the Workers' Compensation process can be obtained by contacting the DAS Worker’s Compensation POD (das_rfaxwchu@ct.gov).  For more information on Worker's Compensation please visit the Workers' Compensation Commission web site at http://wcc.state.ct.us.

These committees assist in establishing and maintaining a safe workplace.  Your input to or involvement with these committees is welcome.  Information regarding the Safety Committee in your particular area is available from your local Human Resources office.  Everyone is responsible for their own safety, the safety of the people we serve and for the safety of each other; however, an accident can still happen. If you experience a work related injury or illness, you may be eligible for benefits under Workers' Compensation.
