AUTO INSURANCE FAQs:

Companies require that all individuals who are licensed in the household and have access to the insured vehicle(s) must be listed as an operator unless they can show proof that they have their own car and insurance. You should contact your insurance company to discuss why additional operators are on the policy and if they have a ‘named driver exclusion’ that could be used to possibly lower your premium. If the additional operator does not live in your household, we have found that there may be a discrepancy with the Department of Motor Vehicle records that need to be corrected regarding the proper address of that driver. A company has the right to charge the required premium for the risks being insured. This would include charging premium for all vehicles and drivers who reside in the household and have regular access to your vehicles.

Connecticut's minimum insurance requirements are $25,000 Per Person/$50,000 Per Accident for Bodily Injury and $25,000 Per Accident for Property Damage or $50,000 single limit for bodily injury and property damage. You are also required to have at least $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to protect against drivers who may be uninsured or not have enough coverage. It is always recommended to shop for higher coverage because the minimum limits may not be enough to provide sufficient financial protection. Collision and comprehensive insurance are not required by law, but they cover damage to your own vehicle regardless of fault and are required by a lender or leasing company. Before purchasing insurance, you should discuss what may be appropriate liability limits with your insurance agent/advisors.

Generally, a personal automobile policy will exclude coverage for business activities. It is important to read your insurance policy to see what it covers. The insurance contract sets forth provisions describing what losses are covered as well as the insurance company’s obligations after a loss. There are standard exclusions that may apply based on the cause and origin of the loss.

It is recommended that you review your automobile insurance coverage at every renewal to ensure that you are getting all the discounts you are entitled to as well as reviewing your current coverage.

It is recommended that you shop around yearly with your agent or insurance company representative to ensure you are getting the best available price.
