Understanding Your Options to Help Lower Your Auto Insurance Premium

Whether you are a brand-new student driver or someone who has been driving for decades, there are options available to help lower the cost of your auto insurance premium.

What affects premiums?

First, it’s important to understand some of the factors that may affect your premium. They are:

  • Your driving record and claims history
  • The type, age and model of your vehicle
  • Where you park: Garages or locked parking lot decrease the chances that your car will be stolen
  • Anti-theft devices
  • Weather conditions
  • Your deductible – generally if you increase your deductible your premium will decrease

Options for discounts and savings

Having a safe driving record is one of the most important ways to help lower your premium. Your insurance company may also provide discounts if you:

  • Pay online or pay your premium in full
  • Bundle your home and auto with the same insurer
  • Have safety related features on your vehicle
  • Possible savings with memberships in certain programs like AAA or professional/alumni groups

Older drivers

For drivers over the age of 60 in Connecticut, taking a safe driving course can lower your premium by at least 5%. Some insurance companies may provide an even bigger discount.

Young Drivers

  • For young drivers, taking a driver’s education course may help lower your premiums.
  • Some insurers may voluntarily offer “good student discounts” for young drivers with good grades.
