- Where do I go to schedule an exam to get my license?

- How do I schedule my licensing exam?
To schedule your licensing exam, visit the Pearson website at Pearson - Connecticut Insurance. You will need to create an account if you’re a first-time user and fill in the required fields. Once your account is set up, follow the step-by-step instructions to select your preferred examination date and location. You must schedule your exam at least 24 hours before your desired exam date.
- Can I take the exam online or do I have to go into a facility?
Connecticut discontinued online exams, August 1, 2025. All exams are taken through one of Pearson’s physical test centers.
- How many times can I take the exam?
There is no overall limit on the number of attempts, but a 24-hour waiting period is required between each scheduling.
Note: This rule does not apply to Surety Bail Bond candidates. If you have questions regarding the Surety Bail Bond license type, you must email: Bailbonds@ct.gov.
- How long are my exam results valid for?
Your exam results are valid for one year.

Neither the Connecticut Insurance Department nor Pearson provides study material for licensing examinations.

- I passed the exam. How long do I have to wait until I can apply for my license?
After passing the exam, please allow 1–2 days for your results to be uploaded to the national database.
You must apply for your license within one year of passing the exam. If you do not apply within this time-frame, you will be required to complete the pre-licensing course again and retake the exam.
To apply for your license, visit the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website.
- Can I review the exam questions or get feedback on my performance?
You will need to contact Pearson directly.
- I successfully passed the CT exam, but I am unable to apply for a new license on NIPR. What should I do?
Allow up to 3 days for exam results to be reported to the national database.
If it has been more than 3 days and you still cannot apply, contact cid.licensing@ct.gov, as your Social Security number or date of birth may have been entered incorrectly when you registered with Pearson. You may be asked to provide a copy of your SSN card and/or verify your date of birth if discrepancies are found.
- Who do I contact to reschedule a state exam?
Reservations for re-examinations cannot be made at the test center or through the Connecticut Insurance Department. Candidates must schedule their exam at least 24 hours before the desired examination date.

- If I move to Connecticut and have never held a Connecticut license but have held or currently hold a resident license in another state, do I need to take any insurance exams?
- If you currently hold an ACTIVE resident license in another state:
Submit a nonresident license application through NIPR. Once your nonresident license is issued, complete the Residency Change Request form. The Department will then update your license from nonresident to resident status. - If your previous resident license was CANCELLED within 90 days:
Submit a resident application through NIPR. You will not be required to take the Connecticut exam before submitting the application. - If your previous resident license was CANCELLED after 90 days:
You must complete first-time licensing requirements, including the pre-licensing course and passing the exam, before submitting your application through NIPR.
Note: Connecticut does not require a Letter of Clearance to obtain a resident license.
- If you currently hold an ACTIVE resident license in another state:
- It has been some time since I last held a CT license. Do I need to retake the exam to reinstate it?
Resident Producers:
If your license has been cancelled for more than one year, you must complete the pre-licensing course and pass the Connecticut exam before applying for a license online through NIPR.
Nonresident Producers:
If your license is within the one-year late renewal period, submit the late renewal application and fee through NIPR.
After the one-year late renewal period, you may reinstate by applying for a new license through NIPR, if you hold an active out-of-state resident license.
Non-Producer licenses:
Residents or those previously licensed by Connecticut have up to two years to reinstate without retaking the exam.
- Are surplus lines applicants required to take a pre-licensing course prior to taking the exam?
No, there is no pre-licensing course requirement for the Surplus Lines Broker license.
Note: Residents must hold an active, good-standing Producer Property & Casualty license in Connecticut before submitting a Surplus Lines Broker application.
