Disaster Preparedness and Recovery: Hurricane Season

Prepare for Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. While Connecticut is not directly impacted by every tropical system, hurricanes and tropical storms can bring dangerous conditions, including heavy rainfall, flooding, high winds, storm surge, and property damage.

Preparing before a storm can help protect your home, understand your insurance coverage, and make the recovery process easier if damage occurs.

Before the Storm

Review Your Insurance Coverage

Before a storm threatens Connecticut, review your homeowners, renters, or business insurance policy to understand:

  • What types of damage are covered
  • Your deductibles, including any separate windstorm or hurricane deductibles if applicable
  • Whether your coverage includes additional living expenses if you are unable to stay in your home
  • Whether you have enough coverage to repair or rebuild your property

Remember: Flood damage is generally not covered by standard homeowners insurance policies. Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and private insurers.

After a Hurricane or Tropical Storm

If Your Property Is Damaged

After the storm has passed and it is safe to do so:

  • Contact your insurance company to report damage and begin the claims process
  • Take photos and videos of damage before making repairs, if possible
  • Take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage, such as covering broken windows or placing a tarp over a damaged roof
  • Keep receipts for temporary repairs and other storm-related expenses
  • Be cautious when hiring contractors or repair services after a storm

Do not make permanent repairs until your insurance company has had an opportunity to inspect the damage, unless repairs are necessary to prevent further damage.

Avoid Storm Repair Scams

After a hurricane or tropical storm, homeowners may receive offers from contractors or other individuals promising quick repairs.

Be cautious of anyone who:

  • Demands immediate payment or a large upfront deposit
  • Pressures you to sign a contract before you understand the work being performed
  • Offers to waive your insurance deductible
  • Asks you to sign over your insurance claim benefits
  • Cannot provide proof of licensing, insurance, or references

Work with reputable contractors and contact your insurance company before agreeing to repairs.
