Be Weather Ready: Wildfire Risk in Connecticut
Dry conditions, warmer temperatures, and windy days can create the perfect environment for fires to start and spread quickly. Even a small spark can turn into a fast-moving brush or grass fire that could threaten nearby homes, structures and communities.
The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) is encouraging residents to understand their wildfire risk, take simple steps to reduce exposure, and review their insurance coverage so they are prepared.

Understand Your Insurance Coverage
- Most homeowners and renters' insurance policies generally cover fire damage, including wildfire-related damage to your home and personal property.
- Commercial property policies generally cover fire damage to buildings and business property; however, some elements of coverage, such as liability, may include limitations or exclusions.
- Coverage typically includes damage to your home or building and personal property, subject to policy terms, limits, and deductibles.
- Additional living expenses may be covered if you cannot live in your home due to fire damage.
- Businesses should carefully review policies, as some commercial coverage may include exclusions or limitations related to wildfire, particularly for liability coverage
If you have questions, contact your insurance agent or company to confirm your coverage.
Reduce Your Risk at Home
- Clear dry leaves, brush, and debris from around your home and other nearby structures.
- Keep roofs, gutters, and decks free of flammable materials.
- Store firewood, propane tanks, and other combustibles away from buildings.
- Follow local rules on open burning and avoid burning during high fire risk conditions.
If You Experience Fire Damage
- Contact your insurance company as soon as possible.
- Take photos or video of damage before cleanup begins.
- Keep receipts for temporary repairs and additional living expenses
